Brief History
In the early 1950s, palletised cargo technology began to play an important role in transport in order to improve the efficiency of transport costs.
Over time, railway companies realised that this development would become a future logistics necessity, and they immediately set out to meet this need.
In 1961, the railway companies DB, SBB, CFL, FS, NS, SNCB, SNCF and ÖBB established the EPP (European Pallet Pool).
The basic prerequisite for this project was—and still is—the uniform quality of pallets. For this reason, the EPP member railway companies agreed to use exclusively standardised pallets with dimensions of 800 × 1200 mm, in accordance with UIC data sheet 435-2.
Overview

In Romania, MAV-REC Kft., based on the mandate received from RAIL CARGO HUNGARY Zrt., has entrusted MAV-REC PALET S.R.L. with carrying out grading inspections and authenticating pallets bearing the UIC–EUR marking.
Under this mandate, MAV-REC PALET S.R.L. examines and verifies compliance with the production standard (UIC 435-2) at manufacturers and the repair standard (UIC 435-4) at repairers.
Basic Concept
Through continuous monitoring, we ensure that as few pallets as possible that do not comply with the EUR standard—yet bear this symbol—are placed on the market.
Through its strategic activity, based on new principles and carried out in accordance with legal provisions, MAV-REC PALET S.R.L. aims to contribute to a significant improvement in the situation of Euro pallets in Romania.

Euro pallets with dimensions of 800 × 1200 × 144 mm are based on internationally standardised dimensions.
- Dimensions: 800 × 1200 × 144 mm
- Board width: 100 mm and 145 mm
- Board thickness: 22 mm
- Pallet height: 144 mm
- Standard: UIC 435-2 / EUR-1, 10th edition
- Load capacity: 1,500 kg, provided the load is evenly distributed across the entire pallet surface
Repair
The repair of “EUR” pallets is regulated by UIC 435-4 / EUR-1 and may be carried out only by a repairer holding a valid repair authorisation/licence issued by Rail Cargo Hungaria Zrt. for the respective year.
An “EUR” pallet that has been repaired must undergo inspection before being put back into circulation and must be fitted with a certification clip bearing the repairer’s symbol. This marking is located on one of the pallet’s middle side blocks.
